Funding and Grants

Funding was committed to the following projects through the August 2006 funding round.

Bioenergy in the Avon
Captain Cleanup Energy Education Program
Perth Sun Fair 2007
Saving Water and Power Program
Solar Education Project
Sustainable Energy Education Resources Project
Thermal Field Monitoring Station
Home Energy Audits and Education

Bioenergy in the Avon:
Avongro Whealtbelt Tree Cropping Inc. - $37,500

Avongro Whealtbelt Tree Cropping Inc. will develop case studies to explore the suitability of potential new biomass industries for the Avon Region in Western Australia. The case studies will help assess whether sufficient biomass can be grown and integrated into the landscape to address land degradation and provide the resources to supply new bioenergy industries for local use and export. The case studies will focus on the most promising new industries for the Avon Region, including feed stocks, transport and processing opportunities.

Captain Cleanup's Energy Education Program:
Multiple Schools - $24,144 (total funding)

A total of eight schools will take part in Captain Cleanup's Energy Education Program to help reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in the local community. The education program aims to increase student awareness of energy use and associated greenhouse gas emissions both at school and in the home. It includes an energy management component, with students involved in an annual energy audit of the school and the development of an energy action plan. As part of the program, students will learn the skills necessary to identify, quantify and evaluate areas for energy efficiency improvements, both at school and at home. Participating schools include Bentley Primary School, Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School, Caralee Community School, Dalyellup Primary School, Gooseberry Hill Primary School, Hilton Primary School, Lancelin Primary School and Maida Vale Primary School.

Perth Sun Fair 2007:
Alternative Technology Association - $10,000

The Alternative Technology Association will hold a sustainable living fair at the University of Western Australia to display information, technology and philosophies related to renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainable living. The fair is aimed at the mainstream general public and includes renewable energy displays, interactive demonstrations and seminars on energy efficiency. It also provides an opportunity for exhibitors to network and share information, resources, ideas and experiences.

Saving Water and Power Program:
Environment House - $50,000

Environment House will provide up to $50 worth of energy efficiency products free of charge as part of its $WaP (Saving Water and Power) Program. Among other initiatives, the $WaP Program will provide low income households with home energy and water audits. A range of energy efficiency products will be offered as part of the audits to encourage low-income households to participate in the program, including power point timers, individually-switched power boards, LED night lights, compact fluorescent lamps, draught-stoppers and hot water pipe insulation.

Solar Education Project:
Leeming Senior High School - $10,000

Leeming Senior High School is developing a school-wide educational project focussing on alternative energy solutions. The main component of the project is to design and construct a solar powered car, which will then be entered in the Panasonic World Solar Challenge. The project will increase awareness and knowledge of solar energy amongst students directly involved in the project, as well as raise awareness among the whole-of-school community and members of the wider community.

Sustainable Energy Education Resources Project:
Edith Cowan University - $50,000

Edith Cowan University, in collaboration with the Education Department, four schools and the Australian Association for Environmental Education, will develop and trial children and adult education materials aimed at reducing energy consumption and increasing the uptake of renewable energy technologies. The materials will initially be trialled by two year groups of children at Dalyellup Primary School and 50 householders in the local area. They will then be evaluated, reviewed and retrialled more broadly in four schools in the South West region. Under the Energy Challenge, Amaroo Primary School, Bunbury Primary School, Dalyellup Primary School and Bunbury Cathedral Grammar will receive renewable energy generation equipment funded by Worsley Alumina (including solar, wind and bio-diesel equipment). The education materials will ultimately be made available for wider dissemination through the internet.

Thermal Field Monitoring Station:
Random Valley Organic Wines - $20,555

This project will establish and test the performance of field based thermal monitoring procedures in buildings using commercially available infrared thermal imaging and visual data loggers. Random Valley Organic Wines is currently constructing a cellar door outlet which will also serve as a demonstration project of sustainable energy building principles. The building will incorporate an educational thermal field monitoring station, which will provide a highly visible, real time display of the building's performance understandable to the general public. The project will develop field based standard procedures for thermal monitoring of buildings and these will be incorporated in the architecture course at Curtin University and made readily available to industry.

Home Energy Audits and Education:
Liquor Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union WA - $50,000

The Liquor Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union WA aims to raise awareness amongst its members of climate change and educate its members on how they can reduce greenhouse gas emissions within their households. Free energy audits will be offered to 400 members and there will be a competition for those who succeed in reaching greenhouse gas reduction targets. Information about climate change and its potential impacts, about ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the home and about appropriate sustainable energy products will be provided to members through magazines mailed out twice yearly. The program will provide a case study in using an existing organisational structure to educate householders on sustainable energy.
